High-tech Innovation and Advanced Surgical Techniques - Hoopes Vision


High-tech innovation and advanced surgical techniques have transformed the field of ophthalmology providing patients with new treatment options. On January 15, 2019, Hoopes Vision surgeon, Dr. Majid Moshirfar, was the first in the U.S. to perform a new refractive procedure called LIKE (Lenticular Intrastromal Keratoplasty). Potentially a promising surgery for patients with high levels of farsightedness.  “It is our hope to refine and improve upon techniques used in this procedure. LIKE was first developed in Germany by a well-known refractive surgeon Prof. Theo Seiler about two years ago.” This procedure is for farsighted patients (hyperopic) whose prescriptions are too high (+3 to +8) for LASIK. Our physicians at Hoopes Vision are working “in vitro” to develop a variation of this and other surgeries.

Farsightedness (hyperopia) happens when light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina.  This is because the eye is too short or the cornea’s shape is too flat.  This causes hyperopic individuals to have more difficulty seeing up close and creates much more eye strain than for people with normal or nearsighted vision.  Farsightedness is often genetic and present at birth but often becomes more noticeable as people age. Adults who suffer from farsightedness will typically find it to be more difficult to perform simple near tasks.

The LIKE procedure involves utilizing donor corneal tissue which is shaped and implanted into the middle of the recipient cornea, making the cornea rounder, treating farsightedness. LIKE is in its preliminary stages of development. Hoopes Vision is currently studying how to improve this technology along with several other centers around the world. This is a remarkable study that allows us to help more patients with their vision correction needs.
