Every day, we receive numerous questions from people exploring their vision correction options. Can you guess which two questions we get asked the most? Don’t worry; we won’t make you guess. The top questions are: “Can I have LASIK if I have eyelash extensions?” and “Can I wear makeup after LASIK?” These are very common concerns, and I can relate—I’m one of those people who asked about eyelash extensions. They’re a part of my routine, just like picking up my kids. Let’s dive into these topics for clarity.

Eyelash Extensions

“Can I have LASIK if I have eyelash extensions?”

  • If you already have eyelash extensions: Keep them on before your consultation. The chemicals used to remove the lashes can be harsh and may irritate your eyes.
  • If you do not have eyelash extensions yet: Wait for six weeks post-surgery before getting them applied.
  • If you have eyelash extensions and are undergoing LASIK or PRK surgery: Be aware that your eyelashes will be taped down during the procedure, and some lashes might fall out.

Makeup

We also receive many inquiries about wearing makeup after LASIK or PRK surgery. Here are our recommendations to ensure your eyes remain healthy:

During Surgery:

  • No Makeup: On the day of your vision correction procedure, avoid all makeup, including face makeup, skin lotions, and even perfume. Perfume vapors can interfere with the laser energy and affect the outcomes.

After Surgery:

  • Eye Makeup: Avoid mascara for 3-5 days post-procedure. When you resume, use new mascara to prevent any risk of infection. Avoid makeup that can flake into your eyes, such as eyeshadow and eyeliner on the eyelid and inside the lashes.
  • Face Makeup: You can apply foundation two days after surgery. However, avoid powder-based products like blush and bronzer for four to five days.
  • Creams and Lotions: Do not use eye creams for a week after the procedure. Apply other facial lotions with great care, keeping them away from the eye area.

Recommendations:

  • Gentle Removal: Remove makeup gently, especially around the eyes, to avoid irritation. Avoid getting soap or water in your eyes during the first week.
  • Replace Makeup: Replace existing makeup and brushes with new ones after surgery to avoid contamination.
  • Avoid Waterproof Mascara: Waterproof mascara is harder to remove and increases the risk of eye damage.
  • Non-Powder Makeup: Use non-powder makeup on your face and keep all products away from your eyes.

Remember, a few extra days with minimal lashes and a natural look are well worth the life-changing benefits of LASIK. Your eyes will thank you for the care you take during this critical recovery period.
