The Zeiss VisuMax 800 SMILE pro femtosecond laser system has a treatment range of -0.50 to -10.00 diopters (D) for sphere, 0 to 5.00 D for cylinder, and -0.50 to -12.50 D for spherical equivalent. SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, is a minimally invasive eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness and myopic astigmatism. SMILE can’t correct farsightedness or astigmatism that isn’t accompanied by nearsightedness. The VisuMax 800 has a laser pulse repetition rate of 2 Hz, which allows it to create a lenticule in less than 10 seconds for SMILE. The shorter procedure time can reduce stress patients.
The ZEISS VISUMAX 800 with SMILE pro software is a femtosecond laser that treats nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, using a minimally invasive lenticule extraction procedure. The FDA has approved the VISUMAX 800 for this purpose.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, SMILE is indicated for myopia of -1.00 to -10.00 diopters (D) with or without astigmatism of ≤ –3.00 D and a maximum total prescription (spherical equivalent) of < 10D. Other eligibility requirements include:
- Being at least 22 years old
- Having a stable prescription that has changed no more than 0.50 D in the year before surgery
- Having healthy eyes without retinal problems, corneal scars, or eye diseases
- Not being pregnant or nursing
